How to Actually Get Value From British Airways Avios in 2026

5 min read

British Airways Avios has been devalued multiple times in the last couple of years, and at this point, booking flights directly through British Airways is one of the worst ways to use them. Heavy fuel surcharges in business class, limited partner award space, and inflated redemption rates make it a tough sell.

So why bother with Avios at all? Because there's a workaround that most people don't know about, and it can save you thousands of points on the same exact flights.

The Problem With Booking Through British Airways

If you've tried to book a British Airways flight using Avios recently, you already know the pain. The taxes and fees are brutal, especially in business class. We're talking hundreds of dollars in fuel surcharges tacked onto what's supposed to be an "award" flight.

And it doesn't stop with their own flights. Booking partner airlines through British Airways has gotten worse too. Take Japan Airlines as an example. JAL is a oneworld alliance partner, same alliance as British Airways. You'd think BA would have solid visibility on JAL award space. They don't. I was recently searching for a JAL flight for a friend, pulled it up on the British Airways website, and it wasn't there.

On top of that, British Airways sometimes charges more Avios than other programs for the same exact flight. So you're paying more, seeing less availability, and dealing with higher fees. Not exactly a winning combination.

Why Avios Still Matter

Two reasons.

Transfer bonuses.

A couple times a year, Chase, Amex, and Capital One run transfer bonuses to British Airways. We're talking 20%, 30%, sometimes 40% bonuses. So if you transfer 50,000 Chase points during a 40% bonus, you end up with 70,000 Avios. That's a massive boost for just timing your transfers right. These bonuses pop up multiple times a year and don't last long.

Avios are transferable between programs.

This is the part most people miss. Avios is a shared points currency among British Airways, Iberia, Qatar Airways, Finnair, and a few others. That means you can move Avios from your British Airways account to Qatar Airways or Finnair, one-to-one, at no cost. And those programs sometimes charge fewer Avios for the same flight, see more award space, and skip the brutal fees.

The Strategy

Step 1: Transfer your credit card points to British Airways during a transfer bonus (20%, 30%, or 40%).

Step 2: Move those Avios from British Airways to Qatar Airways or Finnair at no cost.

Step 3: Book through Qatar Airways or Finnair at a lower rate than what British Airways would charge.

You're using British Airways as a transfer hub, not as a booking platform. That's the workaround.

4 Redemptions Where This Strategy Pays Off

1. Japan Airlines Flights Through Finnair

JAL operates some of the best business class products in the world, and finding JAL award space through British Airways can be frustrating. As I mentioned, British Airways sometimes can't even see JAL availability that other programs can.

Finnair, on the other hand, does see it. And since Finnair uses Avios too, you can transfer your British Airways Avios to Finnair and book JAL flights directly on the Finnair website. Even Air France, which isn't even a oneworld partner, sometimes sees JAL award space that British Airways misses. That tells you something about how limited BA's search engine is.

The play: transfer credit card points to British Airways with a bonus, move those Avios to Finnair, and book JAL flights that British Airways couldn't find.

2. Cathay Pacific Business Class Through Finnair

Cathay Pacific business class is one of the most sought-after products for flying to Asia. Finding availability isn't easy, especially in business class. But when it opens up, this redemption is strong.

Cathay Pacific Business Class: Finnair vs. Asia Miles
ProgramRoute
Cathay Pacific Asia MilesLAX-HKG89,000 miles
Finnair (Avios)LAX-HKG85,000 Avios
Finnair (Avios) + 40% Bonus

Cathay Pacific's own program, Asia Miles, charges around 89,000 miles for that route. Finnair charges 85,000 Avios. Already less. Now factor in a 40% transfer bonus to British Airways, and you only need about 61,000 credit card points to get 85,000 Avios. Transfer those to Finnair and book.

Cathay Pacific doesn't really run great transfer bonuses on their side. If they do, it's usually around 10% and it's targeted. So stacking through British Airways is almost always the better path.

Finding Cathay Pacific business class availability takes patience. It's a bit like finding a needle in a haystack. But when it opens up, this is one of the better business class redemptions to Asia.

3. Qatar Airways QSuites Through Qatar Airways Avios

This one is my personal favorite and probably the highest-value redemption on this list.

QSuites is consistently rated among the top business class products in the world. A typical cash ticket from the US to Doha runs $5,000 to $8,000 each way. Through Qatar Airways Avios, it costs 70,000 points.

Now do the math with a 40% British Airways transfer bonus. You need to transfer about 50,000 credit card points to British Airways, which turns into 70,000 Avios. Move those to Qatar Airways and book QSuites.

50,000 credit card points for a $5,000+ business class seat. That's the kind of redemption that makes this hobby worth it.

Qatar Airways occasionally runs their own transfer bonuses, but they're usually small (around 10%) or structured in a weird way. The British Airways route with a 40% bonus is significantly better.

4. Domestic US Flights Through Qatar Airways

This one is more practical and probably the most useful for everyday travel.

British Airways used to be the go-to for cheap domestic flights on American Airlines and Alaska Airlines. Flying from the West Coast to Hawaii was 13,000 Avios. Short hops like LAX to Las Vegas were dirt cheap. Those days are over.

Domestic Flights: British Airways vs. Qatar Airways

LAX-LAS13,500 9,500
LAX → JFK22,00016,000

Same seat. Same plane. Just booked through a different program. The taxes and fees are the same too. It's an extra step to move your Avios from British Airways to Qatar Airways, but you're saving thousands of points per flight. If you're traveling as a family, those savings add up fast.

The Bottom Line

British Airways Avios isn't broken. The way most people use it is.

Stop thinking of British Airways as a booking platform. Think of it as a transfer hub. Stack those transfer bonuses when they come around (and they come around multiple times a year), move your Avios to Finnair or Qatar Airways, and book through those programs instead.

You can use Finnair to book Japan Airlines flights that British Airways can't even see, or Cathay Pacific business class for fewer points than Cathay charges through their own program. You can use Qatar Airways to book QSuites for 50,000 credit card points, or domestic American Airlines and Alaska Airlines flights for thousands fewer Avios than British Airways charges.

You worked hard to earn those points. Don't waste them on a bad redemption when a smarter route exists.
