These redemptions are in economy only, so no business class. But if you're okay flying economy, there's a way to maximize this even further: adding a stopover.
A stopover is different from a layover. A layover is less than 24 hours. A stopover is more than 24 hours. Alaska's generous stopover rules let you add one on a one-way international itinerary at no extra points cost.
Below are some example stopover itineraries:
Salt Lake City - Honolulu (Stopover) - Papeete, Tahiti
Anchorage - Honolulu (Stopover) - Osaka, Japan
You can even use this when flying from Anchorage, Alaska. These redemption sales apply to pretty much any city that Alaska Airlines or Hawaiian Airlines services
Phoenix - Taipei (Stopover) - Hong Kong
Another great thing about these sales is that they also apply to partner airline bookings. Partner bookings, though, are kind of difficult because the award availability can be kind of sparse sometimes, so just FYI
Los Angeles - Nadi, Fiji (Stopover - Sydney, Australia
How to search for stopover itineraries
Go to the Alaska website, click on multi-city search, and make sure the "Use Points" box is checked.
There are a couple of rules that you have to follow for the stopovers.
- Your stopover can be a maximum of 14 days
- No mixing multiple partner airlines
- You can mix Alaska and Hawaiian flights with one other partner airline
- You can book one stopover per one-way itinerary
- Stopovers are technically for international flights only, though there are some domestic applications
